Say hello to fall and color

After making it through an excruciatingly hot, record breaking, drought ridden summer, we are finally experiencing the blissfully cool, active days and evenings of fall here in St. Louis.  What St. Louis may lack in waterside activity and cool evening breezes over the summer months, we make up for in our quintessentially crisp, clear days during the change of season that surround our city in the fall.  From the rallying cry of devoted Cardinal fans at the end of another perfect season of baseball to the launch of a kaleidoscope of color during the Forest Park Balloon race, the celebration of fall in St. Louis is extraordinary.

Speaking of color, this Fall season in particular, it is difficult to miss the mesmerizing array of fabulously fresh and invigorating hues presented.  The message COLOR IS EVERYWHERE is evidenced by the eclectic blend of wearable bright clothing, shoes and jewelry to the fun yet livable saturated color options available in fabric, lighting and accessories.  Adding even one of these choices to an interior, instantly invigorates and provides a freshness to a design scheme. With "color" in mind, I have pulled together a few of my favorite design inspirations along with some wonderful fabrics being used in design plans I am finalizing for a few clients.

I hope these will inspire you to add that perfect, colorful update to your own interiors this fall season and beyond.

Happy fall to all,

the art of illumination

A beautiful light can do for a room what stylish accessories can do for an outfit. Selecting the perfect lamps, chandelier or sconces adds that final, personal touch to a room, while enhancing whatever mood or ambiance you are trying to create.  The lighting choices you make should be as personal as when selecting pieces of art. The proper lighting, while essential to properly showcase and bring into play the furnishings in a space, should also speak to one's personality and style, while simultaneously providing pleasing contrast and complement to the design scheme.

Chandeliers are considered ambient lighting, a technique that is used to illuminate that specific space and its close surroundings. Gone are the days when this type of lighting was used only in dining or living rooms. Today chandeliers are also used in bathrooms, foyers and even kitchens. Their openness and fluidity make them a great alternative to add sophistication to small areas without compromising visual space.

Pendants and wall sconces represent the perfect space-maximizing lighting alternative, and are never short on style.

The opportunities to infuse personality into a room with table and floor lamps are endless.  It is important to consider the type of furniture available for lamp placement, and what other light sources are available. Lighting is most effective when derived from a variety of sources. Make the most of all available options, using ceiling and wall lighting in conjunction with table and floor lamps wherever possible.

By taking the time to investigate and select lighting that is both personal and  esthetically appropriate will ensure a design scheme that is pleasing over time, and not just at the moment of project completion.  Lighting is paramount to realizing the artistic vision and personality of any interior design project.
